Etsy digital download profit for UK sellers

What changes for digital products
A physical order carries postage, packaging and often delivery charged to the buyer, which Etsy's percentage fees also apply to. A digital download has none of those, so the fee base is just the item price. Your costs move instead into things that aren't per sale: design time, software and font licences, mockup subscriptions. Those belong in monthly overhead, not in the per-sale sum.
Each sale also uses up a listing: Etsy charges a fresh listing fee when a listed item sells and auto-renews. That's why the 15p sits in every column below.
Three worked examples
| Line | £4.99 | £9.99 | £19.99 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Buyer pays | £4.99 | £9.99 | £19.99 |
| Transaction fee (6.5%) | − £0.32 | − £0.65 | − £1.30 |
| Regulatory operating fee (0.48%) | − £0.02 | − £0.05 | − £0.10 |
| Payment processing (4% + 20p) | − £0.40 | − £0.60 | − £1.00 |
| Listing fee (illustrative 15p) | − £0.15 | − £0.15 | − £0.15 |
| Total Etsy fees | £0.90 | £1.45 | £2.54 |
| Fees as % of price | 18.0% | 14.5% | 12.7% |
| Contribution per sale | £4.09 | £8.54 | £17.45 |
At £4.99 the fixed 20p and 15p are about 7.0% of the price on their own, so fees take 18.0%. At £19.99 the same 35p is under 2%, and fees fall to 12.7%. Bundling several low-priced files into one listing is one way sellers reduce the weight of fixed charges — whether buyers prefer it is something only your shop data can tell you.
"Contribution" here is what's left of each sale to pay for your overheads, your time and tax. It is not your take-home pay.
What Offsite Ads does to the same sales
If a sale is attributed to Etsy's Offsite Ads, Etsy charges an extra fee on that order: 15%, or 12% for shops that are required to take part after reaching Etsy's sales threshold. It applies only to attributed orders, not every sale. At 15%:
| Line | £4.99 | £9.99 | £19.99 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Contribution without Offsite Ads | £4.09 | £8.54 | £17.45 |
| Offsite Ads fee (15%) | − £0.75 | − £1.50 | − £3.00 |
| Contribution on an attributed sale | £3.34 | £7.04 | £14.45 |
On a £9.99 download, an attributed sale keeps £7.04 instead of £8.54. That's still positive with no other costs, but if you also run Etsy Ads, add your ad cost per order and the margin can disappear quickly.
UK VAT and fee VAT
VAT on Etsy's seller fees
Many UK Etsy seller accounts are charged VAT on Etsy's seller fees. The examples above deliberately assume zero VAT on fees to keep the arithmetic readable, so they overstate what you keep if you pay fee VAT you can't reclaim. Check your Etsy statement, then enter your actual irrecoverable fee VAT in the calculator's fee-VAT field.
VAT the buyer pays on a download
Depending on where the buyer is, your own status and the rules that apply, Etsy may collect and remit VAT on digital downloads itself. Don't assume you personally owe all the VAT the calculator's VAT toggle strips out — that toggle simply models a VAT-registered seller accounting for output VAT on the price. Confirm your position on Etsy's fees and taxes help page (opens in new tab) or with an adviser. This is not tax advice.
